Cadillac Eldorado 1968
Eldorado - The Golden One
In 1968 the 8th Generation of the Cadillac Eldorado benefited from a new engine. The 472 ci (7.7 litre) V8, with 375 HP and 525 lb/ft torque and front wheel drive could propel the Eldo to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds. With a top speed of 120 mph this 2 door Luxury Car was a huge success for Cadillac.
Production numbers saw an increase to 24,528 with excellent sales despite the high list prices. The cost new then was $ 6,600. That may not seem high looking through rose tinted spectacles of today but back in 1968 when life was in black and white, you could buy a new house in the UK for that!
This example is finished not in black or white but beautiful Topaz Gold.
Bob Mitchell, head of GM Design, wanted a crisp edged styling, the rear end design was actually inspired by the GM-X Stiletto concept car. In addition to the usual Cadillac features, this model year included concealed windscreen wipers, front disc brakes as standard and the rear side windows retract sideways, not down, into the C Pillars.
In December 1967, Elvis bought a ’68 model in Topaz Gold for Priscilla. One day it would not start, so Elvis shot it in the front passenger fender!
This one does start, so no need for bullets….
